HOME FAQ: Is Your House Ready For Winter?

Home FAQ Is Your House Ready For Winter

Winter comes to Santa Fe, New Mexico and brings colder temperatures, snow and fun skiing. Typically, this happens in December, January and February. Winter here is over all fairly pleasant with blue skies and sunshine following snowy days. The average temperatures in winter range from of low of 19 degrees to a high of 49 degrees. Our Santa Fe houses do not automatically adjust to winter. Here are some tip reminders to help you easily transform your house into an efficient winter home.

    • Check your flat roof and remove leaves and branches. Cut back overhanging tree limbs. Engage a licensed roofing professional to inspect for any holes or indentations and the sealing caulking around the roof parapets, where roof material connects with stucco.
    • Repair any windows with cracks, broken panes or gaps
    • Inspect and/or Chimney Sweep your fireplace(s) and flue and repair and clean
    • Check and repair all the weather stripping around both windows and doors
    • Check or replace expired batteries in all smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors
    • Hire a professional to inspect your gas furnace and filters or your radiant heating boiler system to ensure it is working efficiently and safely
    • Engage a professional to winterize your swamp cooler/evaporative cooler to prevent damage to the pipelines and rust
    • Winterize your yard irrigation and sprinkler system to prevent freezing
    • Disconnect outdoor hoses from outside faucets and turn off water
    • Reverse direction of ceiling fans to run clockwise to push the heated air down from the ceiling
    • Wrap or store your outdoor furniture to prevent damage during winter
    • Be prepared for winter storms with snow removal products and tools, such as shovels and ice scrapers. Remember snow blowers are not recommended for gravel and dirt walks and driveways.
